Shell jackets under $200, ranked

Under $200 is where shells get interesting. Above that you'''re paying for Gore-Tex Pro and lifetime warranties. Below, you'''re making real tradeoffs. Here'''s how three shells we stock stack up.

Outdoor Research Helium (~$160)

My value pick. Paclite fabric, 6.5 oz, fits in a back pocket. Not the most breathable, but it'''s lighter than anything else in this bracket, and the three-year-old one I own still beads water. The hood is the best in the under-$200 category.

Patagonia Torrentshell 3L ($179)

The one we sell most of. Two-layer H2No shell, slightly heavier than the Helium at around 13 oz, and a much more substantial face fabric. This is the shell you pack for a three-day trip where the forecast is a coin flip. More durable than the Helium, less breathable.

Marmot PreCip Eco (~$110)

Budget pick. Recycled face fabric, 2.5 layer construction. You can tell. In light rain it'''s fine, in all-day rain you'''ll get damp from condensation. But if you need a shell for occasional trail days, it works and you won'''t feel bad when it eventually wears out in year three.

What I actually own

Helium for running and day hikes. Torrentshell for backpacking. That'''s it. I used to own a Marmot but replaced it. If I were starting over on a budget, the Helium is where I'''d start.

What to check before you buy

Raise your arms. The hem should stay at your waist. Zip the collar to the top. It should not choke you. Put a pack on. The shoulder seams should not pin. If any of those fail, try the next size or a different brand.
