We get this question every week. A runner walks into the Cooper Young store, grabs a Speedgoat off the wall, then grabs a Challenger, and looks at us like we should know which one they should take home. The honest answer is it depends on where you run. But that's not a useful answer, so let's go deeper.
The short version
Speedgoat is for actual trail. Roots, rocks, creek crossings, the kind of singletrack you find up at Shelby Farms after a wet week. The outsole is aggressive Vibram Megagrip, the upper is reinforced, and the rockplate keeps you from feeling every rock. If your long run is on a real trail, get the Speedgoat.
Challenger is what we call a door-to-trail shoe. The lugs are shorter, the rubber is softer, and it rolls through pavement way better than the Speedgoat. If you run a mile of road, hit dirt for five, and come back on pavement, the Challenger is the shoe that makes that work without beating up your legs.
Fit differences people miss
The Speedgoat 6 runs slightly narrower than the 5 did. We heard about this from customers in the first month. HOKA still makes a wide, and we stock it, but the standard is snugger through the midfoot than some folks expect. The Challenger 7 kept a roomier fit, closer to the Clifton family.
If you have a wider foot and you're moving from a Clifton into trail, the Challenger is usually a better landing spot. If you've been in Speedgoat 5 and it fit great, the 6 still works but try it on first. We've had people come in wanting the same size and sizing down a half.
When I'd pick each one
I ran Big Backyard Ultra in Speedgoats last year. For an 18-hour day on grass and loose rock, that was the right call. I finished with no hot spots and my quads hated me for other reasons.
I trained for Ouachita 50 mostly in Challengers. Around Memphis, I do 70 percent pavement to trail. The Challenger is lighter, the stack is high enough for long days, and it doesn't punish me on the greenway miles.
What to bring when you try them on
Bring the socks you run in. Bring the orthotics if you use them. Plan on walking around the store for five minutes minimum, then running outside on the sidewalk. Both shoes feel fine standing still. They feel different moving.
If you're still stuck, book a fit session. We'll watch you run both and call it. No upcharge.
