What to look for in women's rain shells

Two questions answer most of the choice: how often will you wear it, and how dry do you need to be? Packable shells like the Patagonia Houdini or Outdoor Research Helium are featherweight and pack to nothing, perfect for go-bags. They're not built for sustained rain or thrashing through brush. True 3-layer hardshells handle real weather and last years. Pit zips matter more than people think. So does the hood — try it on with a hat to see if it actually works.

FAQ

Are rain shells supposed to be waterproof or water-resistant?

There's a real difference. Water-resistant means the fabric sheds light rain for a while. Waterproof, with a real membrane like Gore-Tex or H2No, keeps you dry through sustained rain.

Can I machine wash a rain shell?

Yes, with technical wash like Nikwax or Grangers. Don't use regular detergent (it kills the DWR), and don't use fabric softener.

Is Gore-Tex worth the price difference?

Often, but not always. Gore-Tex Pro and Gore-Tex Performance are top-tier. In-house membranes from Patagonia (H2No) also perform very well. The big gap is between any real waterproof membrane and 'water-resistant' softshells.

How long does the DWR finish last?

Months to years depending on use. When water stops beading, it's time to refresh — Nikwax TX.Direct or Grangers Performance Repel restores the finish in one wash.
