Ouachita 50: everything to know before race day

Ouachita 50: everything to know before race day

Ouachita 50 is the closest proper trail 50K to Memphis. If you've never done an ultra, this is a great first one. If you've done plenty, it still has teeth.

The course, honestly

It is not flat. It is not easy. The first ten miles lull you into thinking you'll crush it. You won't. The middle section climbs and the climbs keep coming. Save something.

There are water crossings. Plural. Depending on the year, expect your feet to be wet by mile eight. Wool socks help. Shoes with good drainage help more.

Aid station strategy

Stations are 5 to 7 miles apart. That's far enough to run dry on a warm day. I carry 24 ounces minimum between stations, and I've been to the edge of that more than once.

Eat real food at aid stations, not just gels. Watermelon, boiled potatoes, PB sandwiches. Your gut will thank you at mile 35.

Gear I'd bring

  • Lug depth 4mm or deeper. Speedgoat, Peregrine, Lone Peak all work.
  • Two bottles up front or a 2L vest. Not one.
  • Lightweight rain shell. The forecast lies.
  • Headlamp in your drop bag if you're near the cutoff.

Nutrition

I eat 250 calories per hour. Some of that is gels, a lot of it is aid station food. I carry a small stash of ginger chews for when my stomach turns. They've saved my day more than once.

The finish

The last 3 miles are rolling and runnable if you have anything left. Most people don't. That's fine. Keep moving.

I'll be there this year, working a bottle drop crew with the Memphis store. Say hi.
