Insulation breaks down into down and synthetic. Down (700–850 fill) is warmer for the weight and packs smaller, but it loses insulation when wet. Synthetic insulation (PrimaLoft, Plumafill, etc.) keeps insulating when damp and dries faster, but it's bulkier for the same warmth. Match weight to use. Mid-weight pieces like the Patagonia Nano Puff or Down Sweater work for cool active days and shoulder-season layering. Heavyweight parkas are for static cold (belay jacket, après-ski). How do I wash a down jacket?

Front-load washer with down-specific detergent (Nikwax Down Wash or Grangers). Tumble dry low with two clean tennis balls until fully dry — usually multiple cycles. Never dry clean.
