More about Insulation

What to look for in insulation

Insulation breaks down into down and synthetic. Down (700–850 fill) is warmer for the weight and packs smaller, but it loses insulation when wet. Synthetic insulation (PrimaLoft, Plumafill, etc.) keeps insulating when damp and dries faster, but it's bulkier for the same warmth. Match weight to use. Mid-weight pieces like the Patagonia Nano Puff or Down Sweater work for cool active days and shoulder-season layering. Heavyweight parkas are for static cold (belay jacket, après-ski). Active insulation like the Patagonia Nano Air or Outdoor Research Refuge fills the gap for high-output cold-weather use.

FAQ

Down or synthetic — which should I get?

Down for dry cold, max warmth-to-weight, and packability. Synthetic for damp climates, high-output activities, and durability. Many people own one of each.

What does the fill power number mean?

Higher fill power down (700, 800, 850) is loftier and warmer for the weight. 600-fill down is still warm — it just takes more of it to hit the same warmth, so the jacket weighs more.

Can insulation get wet?

Synthetic, yes — it keeps insulating. Down loses loft when wet and is hard to dry in the field. If you're in damp conditions often, lean synthetic.

How do I wash a down jacket?

Front-load washer with down-specific detergent (Nikwax Down Wash or Grangers). Tumble dry low with two clean tennis balls until fully dry — usually multiple cycles. Never dry clean.
