Climbing gear is sport-specific. Sport climbers need a harness, shoes, chalk, and quickdraws. Trad climbers add a rack of cams and nuts. Gym climbers can get by with shoes, harness, and chalk. Sport vs trad — what's the difference?

Sport climbing uses pre-placed bolts. Trad climbing places removable protection in cracks. Sport is the easier on-ramp; trad takes more skill and gear.

Yes for outdoor climbing. Rockfall and falls happen. Most gyms don't require helmets but some climbers wear them anyway.

How long does a climbing rope last?
