Memphis, Tennessee, is one of the most beloved cities in the United States. With such a rich culture, an incredible history, friendly people, beautiful scenery, and plenty of things to do, it's easy to see why; and if you live in the great city of Memphis, there's no doubt you love your home. However, no matter how much you adore where you live, you sometimes need to take a little getaway.

If you're itching to get out of Memphis for a little while, but you don't want to plan a big excursion, you're in luck. There are plenty of spectacular places that are just a hop, skip, and jump away from Memphis (or at least a not-so-far drive) that would make for great weekend getaways.

Village Creek State Park

Just 50 miles outside of Memphis's city limits, Village Creek State Park is the second-biggest state park in Arkansas. Located just over the Mississippi Bridge along Crawley's Ridge, here, you'll find the calming scenery of rolling hills and the beauty of the forest, which offer plenty of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, too. If you enjoy golfing, head over to the Andy Dye signature golf course, where you’ll find 27 holes to practice your swing on.

Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park

If you like the idea of spending time in nature but want an even shorter journey, then head to Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park. Located just 17 miles (or about 20 minutes) outside of Memphis, this state park is the perfect quick getaway for recharging your batteries. Explore the Woodland Trail, which features three interlocking loops perfect for hiking, biking, or running. Get your sea legs wet on a pontoon boat ride on the beautiful Poplar Tree Lake, or traverse the cypress swamps in a canoe. There's even an Olympic-sized swimming pool where you can cool off, a real gem of a find, as it's secluded and usually pretty empty.

Oxford, Mississippi

If you're a lover of all things literature, pack your bags for a thrilling excursion to Oxford, Mississippi. Known as a college town, there's a lot more to do here than just attend football games and bars. Head to Rowan Oak, the home of the great William Faulkner and his beloved family, it's free to explore the beautiful grounds, and if you'd like to tour the house, it costs just $5 to enter. Please follow all relevant COVID guidelines at the time of your visit.

Tuscumbia, Alabama

For music lovers, a weekend getaway to Tuscumbia, Alabama, is sure to delight. Situated on the Tennessee River, this city is one of the oldest European settlements in the region, and it's bursting with history and music. Here, you'll find the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, which pays tribute to the many famous musicians who have hailed from the state and also showcases live performances from artists of all types of genres. Tuscumbia's city is also home to beautiful historic buildings, restaurants, pubs, and open spaces that welcome you to soak up the sun.
