The Grivet Take

The Terraventure 5 is Topo's lower-stack technical trail shoe, built for runners who want ground feel and trail connection over plush cushion. The 25 mm ZipFoam stack with forefoot rock plate offers stone-bruising protection without sacrificing the foot-shaped fit and natural movement Topo is known for. The new 6 mm Vibram Megagrip lugs grip reliably across wet rock, mixed terrain, and technical descents. Two trade-offs to flag: the lower stack and firm midsole give up plush long-mileage comfort, so runners chasing max-cushion trail comfort should look at the Topo Vista or NB Hierro v9; and the 3 mm drop is meaningfully lower than most trail shoes, runners transitioning from a higher-drop daily should adapt slowly. Runners wanting more cushion in the same brand should consider the MTN Racer 4 or Vista.

Support

Support TypeSupport Type describes how much built-in guidance the shoe has. Neutral shoes do not add support structure. Stability shoes use geometry, rails, firmer foam, or frame designs to create a more guided feel. Motion control shoes are the maximum-support category and are rare in modern running.

How it fits

Length runs true to size for most runners. The toe box is anatomically wide with full toe splay, Topo's signature geometry. Midfoot lockdown is secure thanks to a well-padded gusseted tongue. Heel hold is good thanks to a low-profile semi-flexible counter; not as locked-down as a traditional trail racer but secure enough for technical terrain. The 360-degree protective rand and reinforced toe bumper add durability. Women's sizing is offered in B (standard) only; runners needing wider should consider the Topo MTN Racer 4 or a different model.

How it feels

The ZipFoam midsole reads light, smooth, responsive and agile per reviewer testing — firmer rather than plush, with the new forefoot rock plate adding protection against stone bruising without sacrificing flexibility. The 3 mm drop and moderate flex through the forefoot encourage a natural midfoot or forefoot strike. The wide foot-shaped platform and low stack give the foot direct trail connection on technical sections. The 6 mm Vibram Megagrip lugs are deep enough to bite into dirt and loose terrain while keeping wet rock traction strong. Above-average outsole durability per reviewer testing.

Tech, translated

ZipFoam in the Terraventure 5 is Topo's EVA-leaning midsole compound, tuned firm for ground feel rather than plush cushion. The lower 25/22 mm stack keeps the foot connected to technical terrain. Forefoot rock plate is new on the v5; the ESS plate adds stone-bruising protection without sacrificing the natural flex through the forefoot. Vibram Megagrip with 6 mm lugs is the industry reference for sticky rubber on wet rock, with deeper lugs than the v4 for dirt and loose terrain. The lug pattern is well-spaced enough to shed mud and aggressive enough to bite into technical descents. The anatomical wide toe box is Topo's signature geometry: wide enough for full toe splay without going zero drop.

What changed from the previous version

The Terraventure 5 retains the line's lower-stack technical-trail character with a 25/22 mm stack and 3 mm drop, adds a forefoot rock plate for stone-bruising protection, deepens the Vibram Megagrip lugs to 6 mm with strong wet traction, and keeps the anatomical wide toe box. The 360-degree protective rand and reinforced toe bumper add durability. The ride stays firm and connected rather than plush. v4 fans coming back will recognize the line with slightly better underfoot protection.

Compare it toSimilar shoes or common alternatives, with the key fit and ride differences called out.

Compared with the Saucony Peregrine 15, the Terraventure 5 has an anatomically wider toe box and a similar lower-stack technical feel; the Peregrine has more aggressive PWRTRAC lugs and a snugger performance fit. Compared with the Hoka Speedgoat 5, the Terraventure 5 is firmer and lower-stack; the Speedgoat is taller, more cushioned, and more rolling. Compared with the Salomon Sense Ride 5, the Terraventure 5 has a wider anatomical toe box and deeper lugs; the Sense Ride is more nimble on smooth-to-mixed terrain. Compared with the Topo MTN Racer 4 in the same brand, the Terraventure 5 is lower stack and lighter on the trail; the MTN Racer 4 is the taller, more cushioned option for longer efforts.
