The Grivet Take

The Peregrine 16 is Saucony's all-mountain trail trainer, now plusher and more confident on technical terrain. Stack jumps to 32/28 (+4mm forefoot vs v15), drop stays at 4mm, and the new Vibram Megagrip outsole with 4mm chevron lugs grips confidently across wet rocks, mud, and loose terrain. Best for technical trail running, mud and wet conditions, and runners wanting a low-drop platform with serious grip. Skip it for max-cushion long days; the Peregrine is built for control and connection to the trail, not pillowy comfort. Light, agile, and confident underfoot.

Support

Support TypeSupport Type describes how much built-in guidance the shoe has. Neutral shoes do not add support structure. Stability shoes use geometry, rails, firmer foam, or frame designs to create a more guided feel. Motion control shoes are the maximum-support category and are rare in modern running.

How it fits

Fits true to size with slightly more toe box wiggle than the v15. Midfoot is secure without feeling tight, and heel hold is excellent thanks to a well-padded collar. The high-strength mesh upper has added protection in high-abrasion areas, and a D-ring for gaiter compatibility. Available in Standard (B) only for women's. The 360-degree rand from the v15 has been removed, which lightens the upper but reduces sidewall protection.

How it feels

Cushion is plush for the trail category at 32/28 stack, with a 4mm drop and the next-gen PWRRUN EVA foam. The added 4mm of forefoot foam vs the v15 makes long days more forgiving. Energy return is quick and trail-appropriate; the platform reads stable without giving up agility. Forefoot flex is good through deep grooves. Vibram Megagrip with 4mm chevron lugs is the standout: confident on steep technical climbs, wet rock, mud, and loose terrain. Ground feel is moderate.

Tech, translated

PWRRUN (next-gen EVA) is Saucony's tuned trail foam. The v16 adds 4mm more forefoot cushioning vs the v15, which gives the shoe more long-day comfort without giving up the trail-appropriate firmness for control. Vibram Megagrip is the gold-standard sticky-rubber trail compound, used here in a 4mm chevron lug pattern. Wet rocks, dust, mud, and loose terrain all get serious grip. This is what makes the Peregrine 16 a confident technical-trail option. D-ring for gaiter at the heel lets you attach a trail gaiter for snow or sand without modifying the shoe. Useful for ultra runners and adventure-style use.

Frequently asked

Does the Saucony Peregrine 16 run true to size?
Yes, the Peregrine 16 fits true to size for most runners. The toe box has slightly more room than the v15, with enough space for natural toe splay without feeling sloppy. Midfoot is secure and heel hold is excellent. Available in Standard (B) only for women's.
How does the Saucony Peregrine 16 compare to the Brooks Cascadia 19?
Both are daily trail trainers, but they target different runs. The Peregrine 16 is lower-stack (32/28), lower-drop (4mm vs 6mm), and more agile, with deeper Vibram Megagrip lugs for aggressive technical use. The Cascadia 19 runs higher-stack, more cushioned, and has an articulated rock plate. Choose the Peregrine for technical trail and aggressive grip; choose the Cascadia for daily trail trainer duty and long-day comfort.
Is the Saucony Peregrine 16 firm or soft underfoot?
Soft for the trail category, with the next-gen PWRRUN EVA foam reading plush and protective. The +4mm of forefoot cushioning vs the v15 makes long days more forgiving. It's not pillowy max-cushion soft; the trail-appropriate firmness keeps the shoe agile and connected to the terrain.
Is the Saucony Peregrine 16 good for technical or rocky trails?
Yes. The Vibram Megagrip outsole with 4mm chevron lugs grips confidently on wet rocks, dust, mud, and loose terrain. The 4mm drop and stable platform read agile on steep technical climbs and fast descents. The high-strength upper with added abrasion protection holds up to scrambling and rough use. This is one of the most confident technical-trail options at this price point.
Does the Saucony Peregrine 16 grip well in mud or wet conditions?
Yes, very well. The Vibram Megagrip compound is the gold-standard sticky-rubber for wet conditions, and the 4mm chevron lug pattern clears mud efficiently. Reviewers consistently praise the Peregrine 16's confident footing on wet rocks, slab, loose terrain, and even minor snow or ice.
Can the Saucony Peregrine 16 handle pavement-to-trail runs?
Yes for the road portion of door-to-trail commutes. The Vibram Megagrip rubber is durable on pavement and the 4mm lugs aren't aggressive enough to feel awkward on hard surfaces. For runs that are mostly road with a trail finish, the Peregrine works. For runs that are mostly road with brief trail, a smoother door-to-trail option like the Hoka Challenger 8 or Salomon Sense Ride 5 would be more comfortable.
