FAQ & Tips

  • What if I am between shoe sizes? We recommend you should size up, especially in active & sports shoes. This includes running shoes and hiking boots.
  • Does 0.5 size make a difference in shoes? Yes, it certainly does! Wearing shoes that are too small can cause pain and injuries. Blisters, loss of toenails and bunions can all result from wearing shoes that are even 0.5 size too small. These are common ailments of beginner runners.
  • Is one foot bigger than the other? It is common for people to have one foot that is slightly bigger than the other. Our tip is that you should buy shoes that fit the larger foot (buy pairs of shoes in the larger size of the two).
  • Should shoes be tight or loose? Unfortunately, this is not a simple question. Shoes should not be too tight or too loose. You should be able to put a thumbs width at the end of your toe box, between your big toe and the pointy end of the shoe. You should also be able to snuggly fit your index finger between your heel and the back of the shoe. If you have not much (or not enough!) space in either of these areas, try a different size shoe.
  • When should I try on shoes? A great tip for runners is to try on running shoes at the end of a work day. As you run, just like when you are on your feet for work, your feet swell. You will want to try on running shoes when your feet are at their largest. This allows them to still fit comfortably after a long distance run.
  • What size shoe should I buy? This shoe chart is not a guarantee your shoes will fit. If you are in the area of Memphis, Tennessee, run on in to one of our running specialty & gear stores and our experienced fit experts will help you out!

Shoe Size Conversion FAQ

What is the difference between US, UK, and EU shoe sizes?

The three systems use different reference points. US sizing is roughly equivalent to UK sizing minus 0.5 for men and minus 2 for women. EU sizing uses a continental scale where each whole size equals about two-thirds of a centimeter of foot length. So a US men's 9 is a UK 8.5 and an EU 42. A US women's 8 is a UK 5.5 and an EU 38.5.

How do I know my shoe size in EU?

Look up your US size in the converter at the top of this page or in the size charts below. Common conversions: a US men's 9 is EU 42. A US men's 10 is EU 43. A US women's 7 is EU 37.5. A US women's 9 is EU 40. EU sizing increments by half-sizes (39, 39.5, 40) just like US, but the numerical scale is different.

How do I know my shoe size in UK?

UK sizes run smaller than US. For men, subtract about 0.5 to 1 size from your US size to get UK. For women, subtract about 2 to 2.5 sizes. A US men's 10 is approximately UK 9 to 9.5. A US women's 8 is approximately UK 5.5 to 6.

How do I measure my foot for shoe size?

Stand on a piece of paper with your full body weight on the foot. Trace the outline. Measure from the back of the heel to the tip of the longest toe in inches or centimeters. Compare that length to the inches or cm column in the size chart. Always measure both feet and use the larger of the two; most people have one foot slightly bigger than the other.

Should I size up in running shoes?

Often yes, by about a half size. Feet swell during long runs, and a snug fit at rest can feel tight at mile 8. The right fit leaves a thumb's width of space between your longest toe and the front of the shoe. If your dress shoe size is a US 9, your running shoe size is often a 9.5.

Are shoe sizes the same across brands?

Close, but not identical. Volume and toebox shape vary more between brands than between models within a brand. Brooks, Saucony, and Asics tend to fit medium-volume feet well. Hoka can run slightly snug in the toebox on some models. Altra has a wider, foot-shaped toebox by design. New Balance offers the broadest range of widths. The numbers on the box are the same; the actual fit may not be.

How do shoe sizes differ between men's and women's?

Most brands offset women's sizing by 1.5 to 2 sizes from men's. So a women's US 8 is roughly equivalent to a men's US 6.5 in length, but with a narrower last (the foot-shaped form the shoe is built on). Some unisex shoes use men's sizing only, in which case women typically size down by 1.5.

How do I convert kids' shoe sizes?

Kids' shoes use a different scale that runs from infant (0C-13C) to "big kid" (1Y-7Y). Around US 4Y to 7Y, kids' sizes start to overlap with women's: a kids' 7Y is approximately a women's 8.5. Most retailers list kids' sizes by age band on the product page; check the brand's specific kids' size guide before ordering.
