Camping & Hiking

What to look for in camping & hiking

Climbing gear is sport-specific. Sport climbers need a harness, shoes, chalk, and quickdraws. Trad climbers add a rack of cams and nuts. Gym climbers can get by with shoes, harness, and chalk. Multi-pitch and alpine climbing add ropes, anchor gear, and helmets. Fit matters most for shoes and harness. Climbing shoes should fit snug without crushing toes. Harness should sit on hip bones and have leg loops you can move in. Always try gear on before deciding.

FAQ

What shoe should I start with?

An all-day comfortable shoe like the La Sportiva Mythos or Black Diamond Momentum. Aggressive downturned shoes come later as your skill grows.

Sport vs trad — what's the difference?

Sport climbing uses pre-placed bolts. Trad climbing places removable protection in cracks. Sport is the easier on-ramp; trad takes more skill and gear.

Do I need a helmet for climbing?

Yes for outdoor climbing. Rockfall and falls happen. Most gyms don't require helmets but some climbers wear them anyway.

How long does a climbing rope last?

5–7 years with normal use, less with heavy whippers. Inspect the sheath for cuts and the core feel for soft spots before each climb.
