More about Backpacking

What to look for in backpacking

Pack volume should match the trip. 15–25L is a day-hike pack. 30–50L handles overnight or weekend trips with light gear. 60L+ is for longer backpacking or trips with heavy bulky gear. Don't oversize — extra capacity means extra weight. Fit the pack to your torso length, not your shirt size. Most quality packs come in S/M/L torso ranges. Adjustable harnesses give you a couple inches of wiggle room. The hip belt should sit on your hip bones and carry the weight, not the shoulders.

FAQ

What pack size do I need for a weekend trip?

Most weekend backpackers fit gear in a 40–55L pack. Light packers can do it in 35L. Heavy gear or cold-weather trips push toward 60L.

How do I size a pack to my torso?

Measure from the C7 vertebra (base of neck) to the iliac crest (top of hip bone). Most brands publish a fit chart. The hip belt centers on your hip bones.

Are running vests different from hiking packs?

Yes. Running vests are smaller (4–15L), built to bounce-free at pace, and integrate hydration. Hiking packs prioritize load carry and durability.

Do you carry waterproof packs?

Most packs are water-resistant, not waterproof. Use a pack cover or dry bags inside for sustained rain. Some brands make true waterproof packs for paddling.
